AT CROSS ROADS,SITTING ON UNCERTAINTY, REDEFINING IDENTITY (2018)
In At a Cross Roads, Sitting on Uncertainty, Redefining Identity, I used the documents that DACA recipients will have to fill out every two years, with one of my documents. I am adorned by a headpiece inspired by Incan culture, where the Cantuta flower was used in the Warachicuy, the great ritual of coming of age. The flowers adorned the foreheads of the youth who underwent tests of bravery and physical resistance in order to pass into adulthood and become considered warriors.) I used this headpiece as a representation of the Resistance, resilience, and determination to overcome the fear that DACA recipients undergo.
With the constant anxiety, I wanted to harness that strength and create, They Stand Tall. I wanted to think about what it means to take an object that was used to adorn the body and expand it to think about the relationship we have with it in space. They Stand Tall, stands in a delicate dance of seeking grounds for roots and feeling uplifted from the earth.
Displaced
Out of place
Where do I belong?
Where do I call home?
There is a clock ticking
While my heart is beating
I know there is a date
And is approaching
There was a date
To define the fate
Of millions in this place
But still there are no answers...to be found
The only sigh of breath
Has been compromised
By an administration
Where they only think of separations
Every two years
We place everything on the line
Putting an arrow on our backs
With uncertainty yet hope...for a renewal
Now that peace of mind
Is gone.
There might be fear yet plenty of strength
And perseverance to keep going
Even though we are at Cross Roads
Even though we are sitting on Uncertainty
We just have to Stand Strong
And redefine our identities
Let love Overtake Fear
Unwrap the mind
And what encapsulated the soul...and let it go
SPEAK UP and STAND UP.
